How to Find Daily Purpose Through Prayer

|

You aren’t alone in your longing to find daily purpose. And you aren’t the only follower of Jesus who wonders why loving Him doesn’t magically settle your heart with the purpose of glorifying God.

We desire to end our days filled with purpose. There’s something wonderful about looking back on your day and feeling a sense of fulfillment. So why do those days feel so few and far between?

How to Find Daily Purpose Through Prayer

The greatest antagonist to our daily purpose is Satan himself. But he never shows up right in front of us, stealing our purpose and leaving us feeling empty and restless. Instead, he masks himself in lies, and he distracts us with earthly objects.

Our enemy shines a light on our day and lies to us about every detail. He smears our daily tasks by telling us they must get done — but only because they’re essential to survival as opposed to a way to glorify God.

He steps over the lowly tasks, telling us those with more purpose don’t have to do these things.

And he reminds us of the things we long for, pointing out that what we have today certainly does not fulfill that longing.

Satan also distracts us.

He plays into our sinful nature that tells us to do more, be more, accomplish more. So we fill up our schedules — some days with activity outside the home, some days with endless house chores.

And he plays into our pride that tells us if only we learned that skill, we would find daily purpose. If only we researched more, if only we organized more, if only… if only…

It’s time to stop allowing Satan the victory over our daily purpose. It’s time to stop giving our sin the reins over what makes us “feel” like we’ve accomplished our purpose for the day.

How do we do this? The first step is a simple one that our earthly and sinful minds mask as difficult: prayer.

3 Truths About Prayer

Prayer is one of the most powerful and purposeful things we will ever do throughout our lives. It is one of the most beautiful gifts God has given to us. And yet many of us fail to utilize this gift because of the distraction of the enemy and our earthly perspectives.

But take a moment to think through what prayer is. When we pray, we are actually, truly talking to the Lord God Almighty, the Creator of Heaven and Earth.

These times of prayer do not need to be in a church. We don’t need to be dressed just right. We don’t need to make an appointment. We don’t need to collect ourselves first.

God has given us the gift of talking to Him whenever we want. And as we pray, the King sitting on His throne — with angels and heavenly beings bowing down in constant praise to the Holy of Holies — hears us (1 John 5:14-15). And loves us. And responds to us.

Scripture tells us many beautiful truths about prayer. Here are just three.

  1. We know prayer is like incense, a pleasing aroma to God (Psalm 141:2).
  2. We know it’s powerful (James 5:13-16).
  3. We know God loves to hear our prayers and answer them (Luke 11:9-13).

How Prayer Helps You Find Daily Purpose

With these truths in mind, let us boldly come before the throne of grace, where we will witness and experience a fulfillment of our daily purpose because:

1. Prayer takes our mind off of the earthly and onto the eternal.

When we stop thinking about how empty the daily tasks are and start picturing them as our daily portion given to us from the Lord, we start remembering they hold purpose in light of eternity. As we pray and obey the promptings of the Holy Spirit, we end our day hearing the joy-filled, “Well done, my daughter” in the depths of our spirits.

2. Prayer softens and humbles our attitudes toward praise.

Our days will certainly feel purposeless if we spend most of our hours focused on ourselves, our problems, our victories. But when we turn our hearts heavenward and spend each moment possible praising God and talking to Him about the circumstances we find ourselves in throughout the day, then each of those moments will be filled with glimpses of His glory. Our God deserves constant praise. And we have more time than we realize to offer him a pleasing aroma of praise.

3. Prayer provides us with joy.

When we spend more and more time praying throughout our day, we will inevitably discover how our desires look more and more like God’s desires. And with that shift comes a peace and joy that can only originate from the Holy Spirit. He provides us with peace that passes any understanding. He provides us with joy that overcomes the negative emotions — or at least a mixture of peace and joy to remind us that our current struggles pale in comparison to our future glory.

What Now?

Pray, dear friend. Talk to your King, your Savior, your God. Carry on conversations with Him, speak quick pleas, offer up praise. Discover how ending your day feeling a certain way isn’t nearly as important as spending the day conversing with Jesus.

Any day spent with Him is a day filled with purpose.
